Fiji Kava

Is it OK to take Kava while on Prozac?
Here in New Zealand, people sometimes relax with a substance from Fiji called Kava. It’s legally available in corner stores, and I like it every now and then.
Well, used to, that is.
I’ve been on Prozac for a while now (an SSRI antidepressant), and I am aware that e.g. St John’s Wort is an absolute no-no while taking Prozac. It never mentions Kava in the manual of my Prozac, but I assume it’s considered so exotic that they may not have bothered.
I’d like to indulge in some Kava again, but want to make sure I don’t, like, start levitating or morphing into other dimensions or something just because it doesn’t go with Prozac.
Any Fijians here who might know?
Anybody else?
Thanks.
Not generally. Kava contains a lot of messy pharmacological compounds that alter the behavior of liver enzymes, similar to how St. John’s Wort produces so many unwanted effects. It also contains a host of compounds that inhibit monoamine oxidase, which could be catastrophically bad when on antidepressants. There’s also quite a few cases of liver damage reported, especially when combined with other drugs.
You’re right though, it is a rather exotic plant, and it’s unfortunately very poorly studied so far – mostly only in the test tube, where it’s been shown to do some very, very worrisome things to the sorts of enzymes and biological systems that are watched for trouble.
